The Teaching and Training System
Jane Passy's Cued Articulation
Cued Articulation [CA] was devised by Speech and Language Therapist Jane Passy originally to help severely speech and language disordered
children acquire, understand and produce meaningful speech sounds which could be built into words, then sentences and finally language.
It is an original system which uses simple hand cues to show where and how speech sounds are made.
Each of the 49 sounds (phonemes) which make up the English Phonological System has a separate hand sign. The signs are logical and based on linguistic theory. The consonant sounds are colour coded as an extra visual clue in written work.
Adult Learners: Cued Articulation’s particular benefit for ESOL is that it is both a visual and cognitive approach to tackling pronunciation difficulties. Cued Articulation can be used for individuals, pairs and small groups and also as an adjunct to basic literacy work in whole-class teaching.
It can also be used with those recovering from head injuries or strokes.
Children: Cued Articulation helps children with difficulties such as poor auditory memory; slow processing; weak phonological
awareness; those with moderate and specific learning difficulties and speech and language difficulties; the hearing impaired; travellers who have had their
learning disrupted and those whose first language is not English.
